My name is not easy to say in Spanish. And forget my last name. The combo of the h and r sound... mmmHmm. I feel your pain, though, peeps. Every day I try and speak Spanish. And, well, sometimes it's not so musical.
Today was a great day. Somehow, we got in the conversation of pancakes and maple syrup. And someone wanted to know what maple syrup was and then Aunt Jemimah was brought out. And Simon the frenchie read the ingredients and said, but this isn't maple syrup. It's corn syrup. And the other "american" (well, she was born in the DR and lived there til she was 8 and then lived in NYC thru HS...) and I looked at each other and just shook our heads. Call it what you want. The fake stuff is the good stuff.
I just wanted to smell it. That's all. I have a keen sense of smell. And smells take me places. After one waft of Tia Jemimah, I was taken to my kitchen table with Dad making mickey mouse shaped pancakes and us setting the table. Even though these days it's more like Aj cooking the pancakes and me pouring the coffe...
And so the pastor's wife, elisabet, decided to make pancakes. Just for me. because i was missing them. and she understood it was much more than just pancakes. it was the feeling of home. and just like that, she cooked up those delicious round circles of joy and we all shared in the pancakes. and you know what simon's first words were after tasting the deliciousness?? I must go to america! hehe. i told him he had to go to a jersey diner. :)
thumbs up for the fake stuff aka aunt jemimah. obvi.
it was such a great moment to share with my new friends. it was sharing a piece of who i am. i taught them about chocolate chip pancakes. and they shared with me who they were. people who care. who laugh. who listen. and love life.
and you know what??? elisabet brought me and extra one to the church service. i opened it up at home and it was in the shape of mickey mouse. God is good. :)
that is so sweet!! so glad you are finding good friends there!!
