bite sized milky ways and winnie the poo.

Today I had a sobering thought: The year 2009 is the first year I will not celebrate Halloween. What?!

I just paused on my end. Really letting that thought soak in. Now, granted I'm sure I could find some party somewhere that is celebrating Halloween, but like the peanut butter here, it's just not the same! Waaa. There will be no children trick-or-treating, no bags of bite sized milky ways or 3 muskateers that are hidden under the corner table in the dining room yet are mysteriously opened, and I'm sure that there will be no Monster Mash playing on the radio.

It's been really fun explaining to my students Halloween. They are so surprised when I tell them I have dressed up every year.  Really?? As what?!  So many misconceptions--one mother thought that we only dress up as scary things.  I told her about how one year all my friends and I were the crew from Winnie the Pooh. And I was Roo  :) That was a looong time ago.  I didn't tell her about last year's costume: a leaf from the rainforest. Not my best year. But hey, cut me some slack. I was student teaching. My cooperating teacher was the Rainforest and she somehow convinced me to be a leaf. Thanks to Nancy's help, it turned out, well, it turned out. :)

And the other big question is about the candy... One mother was like But you never took candy from people you didn't know, did you?  My response: uuuh, well, i'm from a safe area! haha. Nothing ever happened. She was curious about people who just leave a bowl out-- People must not do that because children would take all the candy.  I didn't tell her: been there. done that. The Mansion in Shrewsbury. Nuff said.  ;)

There seems to be a bit of the Halloween influence here, though. It's not uncommon to see random Halloween decorations. The bakery around the corner, for example, is decked out. And this window display is one of the more subtle ones. Personally, I enjoy the crepe paper pumpkin chains that drape the ceilings. But that's just preference...

Here, there is a celebration, too. Surprsie surprise. It's called Castanyadas and it's celebrated by eating roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes and sweet wine. I'll post pictures next week of it. My Catalan class had a party today. Soooo funny!

So, my friends. Crack open a bite sized candy of your choice for me. Or how about a Sugar Daddy?
And think about how weird Halloween has become. I mean, at least when it was started, "the pagans" had a reason for it. Now, it's just weird. Especially when you try to explain it to someone who doesn't speak your native language fluently... oh silly.  But I love it.
