I have a slight crush on the guy who plays his guitar in the hallway of this metro stop where I change lines to get to and from church. He has an IN-CRED-I-BLE voice and he sings great songs. He sings American classics. I assume he is American. If not, his singing voice is right on. It's deep and raspy and just perfect for songs like the Beatles or "I'm a believer." He always puts me in a good mood. Tonight, as I got off the metro in the stinky hot station, I was thinking about how I would have to walk in the pouring rain. And then, I heard him. He was singing Wonderful Tonight. I tossed some change into his soft guitar case which rendered a "Gracias" inbetween lyrics. (Well, actually it was 2 euros. I mean, it's pretty out of character for me to give $2 bills to a guy in the NYC subway, but the 2 euro is a coin. And so it seemed like chump change as I was digging thru my purse. Oh well, I owe it to him.)
He brings joy to my travels. And he's there day OR night. Sometimes, I pretend he sings for me. Next time, I'm going to tell him how much I enjoy his tunes. Or at least I'll smile big for him. I never used to give to guys like him. Especially since he's not a particularly well-kept looking young fellow. In fact, he's quite the opposite. Older. un-shaven. perhaps a special drink by his side. But everytime I approach the turn of the hallway I anticipate his music. And when I hear his acoustic guitar strumming or his voice, I am taken to a place within that is familiar. And I sing a little louder.
Walking to the metro station, there was a storm in the distance. I stopped on the bridge to take this and was REALLY excited that I actually got in on camera.

ReplyDeleteI love it when music drifting through a crowded smelly station stops me long enough to produce a natural smile on my face :-)
